1930 Cord L-29 Phateon Sells at Fall Carlisle Collector Car Auction

Stunning Example Cord Purchased by Buyer with More than a Passion

Saturday, October 03, 2009

The 2009 Fall Carlisle Collector Car Auction closed at a climactic point on Friday evening with the sale of the feature vehicle: a 1930 Cord L-29 Phateon. The stunning example of one of less than one hundred and fifty Cords remaining was sold to a bidder over the phone for an undisclosed figure. The eventual buyer of the L-29 has more than just a passion for the spectacular example of the American automobile; racing legend Christopher Cord is the grandson of the Cord Corporation founder, Errett Lobban Cord (1894-1974).

Cord was a brand name manufactured by the Auburn Automobile Company from 1929 through 1932 and again in 1936 and 1937. Along with the stunning design of the L-29 model came innovative engineering feats including being the very first American front-wheel drive vehicle to be offered to the public.

In addition to presenting the Cord L-29 Phateon, the highest selling car in the five-year history of Carlisle Auctions, the auction organization offered more than 250 collector cars and trucks from all eras, ranging from a 1923 Nash to a 2008 Audi S5. The Fall Carlisle Collector Car Auction once again was held in Carlisle, Pennsylvania simultaneously with the Fall Carlisle Collector Swap Meet and Corral, one of the largest events of its kind in the world. For five days, September 30 – October 4, Fall Carlisle is a utopia to collector, classic and custom car and truck enthusiasts who travel to the fairgrounds from all across the United States, Canada, Europe, South America and Asia.

Carlisle Auctions delivered on their promise of Connecting Buyers with the Cars by connecting Christopher Cord with a family heirloom and true American classic. Carlisle Auctions will once again connect buyers during the Spring Carlisle Auction, held April 22 & 23, 2010; consignments are now being taken.
